Question:
To ask the Minister for Regional Development for an estimate of the cost of the essential maintenance work backlog on (i) M and TRN roads; and (ii) non M and TRN roads.

Answer:
The measured backlog represents that portion of the network which has not been treated under the annual planned Structural Maintenance programme due to a lack of funding. This has deteriorated into a condition which requires major works to raise it to a level where the planned maintenance activities are again able to ensure its continued fitness for purpose. By its nature it increases year on year with suboptimal budgets. The measured backlog is currently estimated at some £982 million.
This £982 million is broken down as follows:
£124 million for the Motorway and Trunk Road Network;
£839 million for the remainder of the network; and
£19 million that cannot be attributed to any particular part of the network, for example, footways.
