Question:
To ask the Minister for Infrastructure how her Department intends to improve the planning system with regards to sustainable development and addressing the climate threat.

Answer:
The overall objective of the planning system is to further sustainable development. The Regional Development Strategy 2035 (RDS) and the Strategic Planning Policy Statement for Northern Ireland (SPPS) provide the key guiding principles for planning in Northern Ireland and both recognise the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
My Department’s planning officials continue to engage with a wide range of stakeholders; are involved in a number of forums to take forward relevant research; share best practice and ensure that the planning system continues to be fit for purpose and evolves to reflect key developments in respect of sustainable development and climate change.
