Question:
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to outline any benefits, economic and otherwise, of the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland for the agricultural sector.

Answer:
I am aware of arguments being put forward about the benefits of the Northern Ireland Protocol for the agricultural sector with reference to our trading relationship with the EU.
However, any benefits need to be considered alongside the significant disadvantages arising from the Protocol, and they go much wider than agriculture. It must also be pointed out that the Protocol has not been fully implemented, with various grace periods still in operation. If these easements were to end, then the disruption to our trade with Great Britain would multiply, particularly with regard to food supplies, adding to costs and restricting choice for consumers in Northern Ireland. I do not see that as being to the advantage of Northern Ireland, nor do I find it acceptable that Northern Ireland remains subject to EU law over which this Assembly has no input or influence.
