‘acknowledges the complex characteristics of biodiversity and ecological breakdown in Lough Neagh which includes high concentrations of phosphates and nitrates from agricultural runoff, pollution linked to Northern Ireland Water’s operations, the durability of the waste water infrastructure, the impact of invasive species and the catalyst of higher temperatures caused by the climate crisis; notes the resolution of this Assembly to address management of the Lough; calls on the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to start addressing the ecological crisis by bringing forward an Environmental Improvement Plan for Northern Ireland that can command cross-party support, as well as a specific action plan for Lough Neagh, by the end of this Assembly mandate; and further calls on the Minister to promote improved environmental oversight by reviewing the effectiveness of current structures, including the Office for Environmental Protection, whilst exploring a potential role for an Independent Environmental Protection Agency.’ |
