To ask the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety for his assessment of the current level of resource wastage in the Health Service, in relation to unused drugs and dietary supplements in hospital and residential care environments.

Answer:

I have been advised by each of the HSC Trusts that they are fully aware of the need to minimise medicines wastage and a range of systems and initiatives are in place to keep wastage to a minimum. However, it is not possible to fully quantify the amount of wastage in relation to unused drugs and dietary supplements in hospital and residential care environments.
