Question:
To ask the Minister for Employment and Learning for his assessment of the proportion of young people considered to be not in education, employment or training (NEET) who (i) have a disability; (ii) are parents; and (iii) are carers.

Answer:
The information below has been produced on the basis of the nearest equivalent definition to NEETS available from the 2011 Census, namely “All usual residents in households aged 16 to 24 who are unemployed (excluding full-time students) or economically inactive (excluding retired and students)”. Ten per cent of the total NEET population of 33,516 self-report that they have a disability that affects their day to day activities ‘a lot’.
A separate analysis based only on those NEETs for which the information requested is available shows that 21 % (7,027) have children.
In terms of care provision, almost 9% (2,935) of NEETs provide unpaid care.
Please note, as the full range of information required is not available for residents of communal establishments, the population used in this part of the answer (32,928) differs from that used in other outputs on NEETS.
