Question: To ask the Minister for the Economy for an update on her Department's Brexit preparations, in line with the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland.
Answer:
My Department has been extensively involved in supporting the NI economy through the unprecedented challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, throughout this I have been mindful that the UK Government has stated the transition period will not be extended, thus preparation for this remains a top priority. I am disappointed to note that there has been no further clarity from UK Government since you last asked this question. I continue to press the UK Government for urgent clarity on how the Protocol, as well as commitments on unfettered access to the UK internal market, will be enacted. Whilst the responsibility for enacting the Protocol lies primarily with UK Government, my officials are advancing work to ensure the Department and its Arm’s Length Bodies’ legislation, policies and services are as prepared as possible for the end of the transition period. In addition, my officials continue to engage directly with businesses to understand how they may be affected by the Protocol and to consider what measures may be required to support them.
