Question: To ask the Minister of Health (i) for his assessment of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on those suffering from schizophrenia; and (ii) which related services and supporting networks remain unavailable or curtailed as a result of COVID-19 rules and regulations.
Answer:
It is accepted that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on people with existing mental ill health, including people suffering from schizophrenia. It is clear from international research and qualitative information in Northern Ireland that those with schizophrenia has been disproportionally effected by both COVID-19 and the associated restrictions. Throughout the pandemic mental health services have not stopped, and many support service for people with schizophrenia has continued. I am very thankful for the frontline staff and community and voluntary sector workers who have kept this going during these difficult times. I do, however, accept that some support services were stopped which has had a negative impact. The new Mental Health Strategy seeks to improve mental health services for all people, including those with severe and enduring mental ill health and their families. I published the Strategy on 29th June 2021, and I can assure you that this patient group has not been forgotten.
