Question:
To ask the Minister for Infrastructure whether her Department is able to erect street lighting on private land with the permission of the landowner, with such land asserted as a public right of way.

Answer:
Street lighting is generally only provided in those roads and footways that are adopted by my Department and which meet the criteria for the provision of lighting as defined in the Department’s current policy.
In certain exceptional circumstances, lighting may be provided in unadopted roads or footways. Such exceptional circumstances would be if there were local factors such as a significant level of night time usage or the absence of reasonable alternative lit routes. These areas would generally be owned by public organisations, such as Northern Ireland Housing Executive or local Councils; lighting would not normally be installed in areas which are in private ownership.
