Question:
To ask the Minister for Communities for an update on her plans to introduce a price cap for a deposit on a private house rental.

Answer:
The Private Tenancies Bill completed second stage of its’ legislative passage on 13 September 2021 and is now with the Communities Committee for scrutiny.
Clause 4 of the Bill limits the amount of tenancy deposit that can be required to be paid or retained in connection with a private tenancy to no more than 1 months’ rent. It provides that any landlord or other person who requires a tenancy deposit in excess of 1 months’ rent to be paid or retained in connection with a private tenancy is guilty of an offence under the Private Tenancies Order 2006.
