Question: To ask the Minister of Education to detail any preparations she has made to introduce part-time learning for (i) pupils at schools with high levels of COVID-19-related staff absences; and (ii) the wider school population.
Answer:
There are no current plans for mass school closures. Any decision to close schools would be taken by the Executive and taking medical and scientific advice into account. I recognise that some schools are currently experiencing pressures with staffing availability and in some cases, have asked some pupils to learn remotely for a short period. My Department published Circular 2021/25 on 6 December to provide further advice and guidance to schools on supporting remote learning, including the circumstances where remote learning may be appropriate. The employing authorities have advised that they are working closely with schools who are experiencing staffing difficulties due to COVID-19 to provide additional support. This includes helping to source appropriate teaching cover where available. Furthermore, the Education Authority have established an Emergency Resourcing Team to support schools and this will remain in place for the remainder of the 2021/22 school year. The Department and employing authorities will continue to support schools and alleviate these pressures wherever possible.
