Question: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to detail on any additional legislation required to increase the maximum fine for littering to £200, as proposed in the draft Environment Strategy.
Answer:
As detailed on page 30 of the draft Environment Strategy, an amendment to the Environmental Offences (Fixed Penalties) (Miscellaneous Provisions) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012 will be required to increase the maximum fixed penalty available to district councils in respect of litter offences from £80 to £200. The amending Regulations will be subject to the negative resolution procedure in the Assembly. An SL1 will be presented to a newly formed AERA Committee in due course.
