Question:
To ask the Minister for Infrastructure what action his Department is taking to ensure road safety on the Belfast Road, Bangor.

Answer:
I am advised that local officials have carried out an assessment of the Belfast Road in Bangor and as explained in the response to your previous AQW 531/22-27, whilst the demand for a pedestrian crossing is acknowledged, regrettably for wider safety reasons there are no plans to install a crossing at this location.
I am sure you will agree that pedestrian crossings must be located in such a manner to ensure they provide adequate space for pedestrians and vulnerable users to safely cross the road and are also sufficiently visible to drivers thus affording them sufficient time to make adjustments so the safety of road users is not compromised. Given that these key criteria cannot be met, regrettably my Department is unable to provide a pedestrian crossing at this location.
As is the case across the entire road network, it is incumbent on all road users to be mindful of the safety of themselves and of others, especially vulnerable road users such as cyclists or pedestrians and those with mobility issues or a visual impairment.
In light of the above and a review of the safety record along this stretch of road, there are no plans to provide additional road safety measures at this time.
