Question:
To ask the Minister of Education to outline the timescale for the provision in Northern Ireland of a GCSE in British Sign Language.

Answer:
The Department for Education in England is working closely with subject experts, stakeholders and Ofqual, the independent qualifications regulator (England), to develop the draft subject content for a British Sign Language (BSL) GCSE. They will be consulting on this draft and then, once it is agreed, interested awarding bodies will be required to develop specifications. Once this work is completed and a qualification becomes available it can then be accredited for use in Northern Ireland.
