Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure how much was spent in the Lagan Valley constituency in the five financial years to 2022-23 on (i) road maintenance; and (ii) payments to motorists for damage caused to vehicles due to road defects.
Answer:
Part (i) My Department does not maintain records of spend by constituency, however details of expenditure on Structural Maintenance outturns analysed between resource and capital can be provided for the Eastern and Southern Divisions. Table 1: Structural Maintenance Structural Maintenance | £’m | Eastern Division | 18-19 | 19-20 | 20-21 | 21-22 | 22-23 | Capital | 13.3 | 12.9 | 10.4 | 13.9 | 14.9 | Resource | 2.2 | 1.9 | 2.6 | 2.7 | 2.8 | Total | 15.5 | 14.8 | 13.0 | 16.6 | 17.7 | Southern Division | Capital | 27.4 | 26.2 | 24.0 | 23.5 | 29.2 | Resource | 5.1 | 4.6 | 5.1 | 5.2 | 5.1 | Total | 32.5 | 30.8 | 29.1 | 28.7 | 34.3 |
Capital Structural Maintenance includes resurfacing and reconstruction, asphalt patching, surface dressing, capital investment in both drainage infrastructure and in the structural stability of embankments. Resource Structural Maintenance includes patching of carriageway and footways. Expenditure is determined by budget availability and capacity in any given year. Part (ii) Records on roads related public liability claims are maintained by Roads Section Office, which broadly align with Council areas. I have provided a link to the management information my Department holds in relation to roads related public liability claims which has been deposited at the Assembly Library and can be found online at: https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/publications/road-asset-maintenance-directorate-management-information-roads-related-claims-period-20182019
