To ask the Minister of Education to detail the number of teachers required to meet future school needs in (i) 2024; and (ii) 2025.

Answer:

ANSWER

The estimated number of teachers (based on projected number of pupils) required for (i) 2024 is 19,859.3 full-time equivalent teachers and for (ii) 2025 is 19,677.0 full-time equivalent teachers.

However, the Board of Governors (BoG) of each school is entitled to determine the number and type of staff required. For a controlled school the Education Authority (EA) appoints the teaching and non teaching staff and is also the employing authority for non-teaching staff in catholic maintained schools. The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) appoints the teaching staff in catholic maintained schools.
