To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs for an update on his Department’s wildflower policy.

Answer:

My department does not have a specific policy on wildflowers.

Many wild plants receive protection through Article 14 and Schedule 8 of the Wildlife (NI) Order 1985. In addition, many species of wildflowers benefit through the wide range of protected site mechanisms, such as Areas of Special Scientific Interest.

Several other departmental strategies and initiatives, designed to protect and restore our natural environment, should also make a positive contribution to wildflower habitat.
