Question: To ask the First Minister and deputy First Minister for a breakdown of funding provided to the (i) NI Bureau in Washington; (ii) NI Bureau in China; and (iii) Office of the Northern Ireland Executive in Brussels, in the last five years.
Answer:
The table below sets out the resource funding provided to the three overseas offices in the last five years. | Office of the NI Executive Brussels | Northern Ireland Bureau Washington | Northern Ireland Bureau China | | | | | 2023-24 | 760,480.37 | 1,090,146.87 | 239,009.87 | (subject to audit) | | | | 2022-23 | 832,438.70 | 1,183,612.92 | 378,204.24 | | | | | 2021-22 | 923,248.66 | 1,148,250.01 | 397,155.31 | | | | | 2020-21 | 841,142.62 | 1,061,991.24 | 373,542.72 | | | | | 2019-20 | 847,801.14 | 1,362,555.26 | 437,650.03 | | | | |
The figures exclude depreciation. The funding for Brussels in 2021/22 and 2022/23 includes ring fenced funding for the NI Protocol of £80k and £147k respectively allocated to the EULITS project. The introduction of IFRS 16 in 2022/23 impacted the accounting treatment of leases such that rental payments are no longer reflected as resource departmental expenditure limits spend and are therefore excluded from the figures: Washington c£260k; Brussels c£205k; Beijing c£60k.
