Question:
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to detail the work he has carried out with (i) farmers; and (ii) the Ulster Farmers’ Union to agree a system whereby no farmer is losing money on their produce, enabling them to continue to operate as a viable and sustainable business.

Answer:
In a market economy it is not possible to agree a system whereby no farmer fails to make a profit as the government does not control prices or decision making on farms. This is also the case for businesses in the wider economy. My Department does provide advice and support to farm businesses, including around £300m in direct payments annually.
