Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure whether his Department is seeking to improve space for bicycles on public transport.
Answer:
This issue is an operational matter for Translink. I have sought the requested information and have been advised as follows: “Railway The current Translink bicycle policy was drawn up in conjunction with SUSTRANS and is similar to other Train Operating Companies in the UK and Ireland. Bicycles are carried free of charge on all rail services after 0930 hours Monday to Friday. Up to 4 full sized bicycles can be carried at any one time within the designated bicycle area. Space is allocated on a first come first served basis. There are no travel restrictions nor limit to the number of ‘folding bicycles’ carried on trains provided they are completely folded down. Tandems, and tricycles are not permitted on any train. It should be noted that during periods of disruption where a bus substitution is required, bicycles will not be carried. The current policy is designed to maximise the number of commuters on rail services during busy times, while affording cyclists the opportunity to take their bikes on trains outside of the peak flows. Changing the policy would have a significant impact on overcrowding at peak times, discouraging rail usage and would have a negative impact on revenues. This approach is complimented by improved cycle storage facilities at the vast majority of stations across the network and we encourage cyclists to use our secure bike compounds. Further details of the scheme can be found on the Translink website https://www.translink.co.uk/bike-fobs Bus Similar to the above, our policy for bus services is aimed at maximising space for commuters and luggage in the morning and providing priority to wheelchair users on all occasions. When bicycles are carried as passengers’ luggage, they will be carried free of charge provided that suitable space is available and that they do not cause obstruction. Unfolded bicycles are not permitted on buses prior to 0930 Monday to Friday, given the need for commuter space. On Metro and Glider services, unfolded bicycles are not permitted at any time, but folded bicycles will be carried where there is sufficient space and provided they do not cause obstruction.” For any future queries relating to operational matters, you should contact Translink directly at aqw.request@translink.co.uk. Making direct contact with Translink will ensure that you receive the information in the shortest possible timeframe and make best use of limited public resources.
