Question: To ask the Minister of Education to detail the consultation his Department undertook with (i) children and young people; (ii) parents; and (iii) school leaders prior to his approval of a £250,000 capital spend on magnetic lockable pouches for mobile phones in schools.
Answer:
Officials are preparing a business case for the pilot scheme and an associated specification for the procurement process. In advance of the roll-out of the pilot there will be engagement with pupils, parents and school leaders to inform the evaluation process. The guidance provided to schools is informed by relevant evidence that highlights the impact of the unauthorised use of mobile devices in school, as well as the excessive use of such devices more generally. The guidance sets out a range of different approaches that could be used in schools to restrict the use of mobile phones, this includes the potential use of inhibiting devices. The circular asks schools to revise existing policies accordingly to develop approaches that work for their own environment. As part of this, it is highlighted that schools should consult with the wider school community, including children and young people as well as parents on the specific delivery of policies at school level.
