Question:
To ask the Minister of Health to detail any initiatives his Department has that are aimed at promoting green spaces in healthcare facilities, in order to enhance mental well-being among residents.

Answer:
As part of its duties under the Climate Change Act (NI) 2022 my Department, in conjunction with its Arms- Length bodies have developed an initial list of priority actions to support efforts to reduce carbon emissions. One action is for the health and social care sector to progress the development of biodiversity action plans to encourage biodiversity and provide natural environments for the mental health and general well being of all service users. Nature based solutions are being incorporated where possible and included in the benefits realisation plan for projects.
Major capital projects are required to follow the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) and aim for an ‘Excellent’ rating. Credits can be achieved by providing external areas to enhance the wellbeing of building/service users.
Major Capital Projects are assessed through design stages using the Achieving Excellence Design Evaluation Tool (AEDET). This includes assessment under the ‘Impact’ category which encourage designs that maximise opportunities for access to usable outdoor space including green spaces.
