Question:
To ask the Minister for the Economy, pursuant to AQW 14548/22-27, how the additional needs of young carers are being incorporated into the agenda and forward work plan of the cross-departmental working group on issues impacting carers, including access to (i) school; (ii) further education; (iii) training; and (iv) employment.

Answer:
My Department is represented on the Cross Departmental Senior Officials Group for Carers by officials within the skills and education policy remit, in recognition of the need for young carers to be supported through their journey through education, training and employment.
Access to Further Education is key for addressing equality of opportunity and creating pathways to good jobs. This is particularly important for those who experience additional barriers to participation, such as people with caring responsibilities. To that end, a range of financial support is currently available including FE Grants, Hardship Fund, Care to Learn (NI) childcare scheme and the Additional Support Fund. Part-time delivery models are also currently being piloted for certain Assured Skills Academies to support those who have other commitments such as caring or health conditions/disability.
In addition to this a recent consultation regarding policy proposals to support unpaid carers in employment, including young carers closed on 30 September 2024. Analysis of consultation responses, engagement with CarersNI and the cross-departmental working group is ongoing to inform policy options.
