Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure, following the recent death of a cyclist at Clifton Street, whether he will consider bringing forward the delivery of the Crumlin Road - Oldpark Road - Ballysillan scheme, as outlined in the Belfast Cycling Network Delivery Plan 2022-31.
Answer:
I was very sorry to hear of the recent death of Mr McMahon and offer my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. As with all fatal collisions my Department will be working closely with the PSNI to assist them with their investigation. In recognition of the importance of quality pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, scheme design needs to be thorough if we want to deliver to the highest standard possible. This can often mean several rounds of engagement with community and other key stakeholders before we commence statutory processes to implement legislation for new cycle routes. Design work is ongoing for the majority of the short term schemes within the Belfast Cycling Network Delivery Plan. My Department aims to progress as many of these schemes as possible in the time period up to the end of 2025, subject to staff resource, budget availability, and the successful completion of statutory processes. Phasing of future design development for Belfast Cycling Network medium and long term schemes is being considered in line with the emerging Eastern Transport Plan and other departmental projects such as Belfast Rapid Transit Phase 2.
