Question:
To ask the Minister of Education whether his Department has engaged with (i) parents of children with special educational needs; and (ii) special schools, in relation to legislation to increase the compulsory school age to 18.

Answer:
I do not propose to increase compulsory school age to 18.
Work is on-going within the Department to scope legislation to be enacted within this Assembly mandate which will require young people to continue in education or training until they are age 18.
My officials are engaging with stakeholders currently on the wide range of issues associated with this proposed legislation. Subject to approval by the Executive, engagement with parents of children with special educational needs and special schools will form an important part of the anticipated public consultation in 2025.
