Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure for an update on the review of safety on the A2 between Bangor and Belfast.
Answer:
Road safety remains an extremely high priority for my Department and we are committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and address the needs of all road users. My officials are in the process of reviewing the latest Road Traffic Collision data from the PSNI for accident cluster sites, including the A2 Bangor to Belfast dual carriageway, to identify if there are any common causation factors which would benefit from the introduction of effective road safety measures. Any engineering measures which are proposed will be considered for inclusion in a future work programme, subject to available funding. In the meantime, I am pleased to advise that my officials have taken forward the cleaning of safety signage along the A2, as well as cutting back any overgrown vegetation. Action has also been taken to resolve reliability issues with the signalised junctions at Ballysallagh and Seahill. One of the best ways to ensure the safety of our roads and fulfil our long-term goal of eliminating death and serious injury on roads by 2050 is by changing driver behaviour. As road users we all have a personal responsibility to behave in a way that keeps ourselves and others safe. The sad reality is that if we do not change our own attitudes when we are using the roads, our death toll will continue to increase.
