To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any consideration her Department has given to the use of Artificial Intelligence to analyse roads for defects and potholes.

Answer:

My Department is currently investigating a number of emerging technologies that interpret and categorise road defects, such as potholes, from images collected on a camera fixed to a moving vehicle. The proof-of-concept trials are underway to validate the solution accuracy and repeatability to determine if it can provide efficiency benefits within the current road safety inspection and maintenance strategy.
