Question: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to detail how much the Northern Ireland Environment Agency has fined NI Water per tonne of waste dumped into waterways, in each of the last five years.
Answer:
The NIEA regulate discharges from NI Water infrastructure under the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999 as amended. Water Order Discharge Consents set conditions to protect both public health and the receiving environment. Over the last five years, based on Court outcome data, NI Water Ltd have been fined a total of £13,750 for water pollution offences under the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999. The figures, broken down by year, are presented in Table 1 below. The fines in Table 1 relate to water pollution incidents investigated by NIEA. In respect of Table 1, no data is held regarding the weight or volume discharged during those incidents.
