Question: To ask the Minister of Health to detail the steps being taken to reduce staff shortages within (i) radiology; and (ii) oncology.
Answer:
Trusts are implementing a number of strategies to address workforce challenges and reduce staff shortages within radiology and oncology. Trusts are actively engaged in targeted local, regional and international recruitment campaigns to ensure vacancies are filled as quickly as possible. Strong links with workforce planning teams and regional recruitment efforts ensure that vacancies are prioritised and advertised in a timely and strategic manner. Trusts currently utilise the support of locum doctors and the independent sector to cover vacancies and ensure services are maintained. To maximise existing workforce capacity, Trusts are expanding advance practice roles. These roles can help alleviate pressure on consultants as well as offering a structured pathway for career progression. In respect of Radiology, a business case for the Multi-professional Regional Imaging Academy is being developed by the Belfast HSC Trust. However, the development remains subject to business case approval and the identification of additional recurrent funding to take it forward. Staff retention is also a key focus of Trusts. Initiatives to support staff wellbeing, flexible working and career development are in place to help retain experienced staff. Regular staff engagement through team meetings, feedback mechanisms and recognition programmes help foster a positive and supportive working environment. As part of a long term strategy, Trusts are actively involved in education and training initiatives. This includes promoting professions through participation in careers fairs, offering work experience placements, and delivering talks at local schools and colleges. Additionally, Trusts are working with academic partners to provide high quality clinical placements and expand training posts, particularly in radiology.
