Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail how the amount of a penalty fine for (i) on-street parking; and (ii) speeding, were decided.
Answer:
The current level of the fixed penalty for speeding was established in 2001, and while the specific rationale behind the original amount is not readily available, it reflects decisions made at the time by the relevant policy authorities. I had recently instructed my officials to undertake a review of penalty fines for speeding, and officials are currently considering the next steps and way forward. The original cost of a Penalty Charge Notice (£60) was increased to £90 in 2012 through a decision taken by the Assembly. This change was introduced to act as a deterrent to those who do not adhere to parking restrictions.
