Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure for an update on the work to deliver a path at St Ita's Primary School, South Belfast.
Answer:
Road safety is a high priority for my Department, and we are committed to working proactively with key partners to make our roads safer and to address the needs of all road users. We are acutely aware that children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable groups using our roads, particularly around schools. My Department recently completed a pilot scheme on Alderwood Hill aimed at improving pedestrian access between St Ita’s Primary School, Cairnshill Park and Ride, and neighbouring residential areas. The scheme included the installation of pencil bollards to prevent inconsiderate parking on footways, and a zebra crossing to enhance safe access to the school for pupils who lived nearby. This pilot scheme has been designed to integrate with a future Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council proposal to deliver an offline footpath between Cairnshill Park & Ride and Alderwood Hill as part of their Carryduff Greenway scheme. As a pilot, it will also help to inform future policy development in this area of road safety and active travel.
