Question: To ask the Minister for Communities to detail any consideration he has given to the development of an indoor athletics track.
Answer:
Answer I recognise the importance of Athletics in Northern Ireland and the value of providing appropriate facilities for athletes. In July 2025 I met with Dame Mary Peters and representatives from Athletes NI and the potential options for an indoor track in Northern Ireland were discussed. Following this meeting I asked my officials to engage with Sport NI and Belfast City Council to explore potential options, including whether a Financial Transactions Capital loan could be used to progress plans for an indoor track. This work is ongoing and engagement with key stakeholders will continue as part of the process. There is a 200m indoor athletics track that can be installed at the SSE Arenda for major events. While this is not a permanent facility and therefore not available for everyday public use or regular training, it does provide an opportunity to host high-profile competitions when required.
