Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure to detail any criteria her Department uses to assess which schools are included in the third tranche of part-time 20mph speed limit zones.
Answer:
Road safety is a high priority for my Department, and we are committed to working proactively to make our roads safer and to address the needs of all road users. We are acutely aware that children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable groups using our roads, particularly around schools. My Department is currently taking forward a third tranche of part-time 20mph zones at 40 schools across the North which will bring the total delivered since 2020/21 to 273 schools https://www.infrastructure-ni.gov.uk/publications/20mph-speed-limit-schools-tranche-3. This Tranche has predominantly focused on schools in rural areas where the national speed limit would normally apply. This initiative is a significant intervention that will help to ensure that children, parents and staff feel safer as they travel to and from school on a daily basis. My Department is also taking forward a review on a number of speed related matters, including 20mph speed limits which is open for consultation. Further consideration on the use of permanent 20mph zones will be taken on completion of the consultation. I would encourage you to contribute to this significant and important piece of work. Details can be found at Speed limit review launched by DfI | Department for Infrastructure. Concerns about driver behaviour, such as speeding, should be directed to the PSNI on their 101 number.
