Question: To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail any assessment her Department has made of the role of the evening economy, including food and hospitality provision, in supporting footfall and business viability in town centres, in East Londonderry.
Answer:
My Department, alongside Tourism NI and the three Belfast Business Improvement Districts, has commissioned Ipsos to conduct research to better understand the issues affecting the night-time economy. While the final report is anticipated soon, the interim findings suggested that in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area the night-time economy made a significant contribution in terms of Gross Value Added and supporting jobs. The interim findings also found that Tourism's potential within the night-time economy is significant but underutilised. Promoting unique night-time experiences and addressing access and safety issues could attract more visitors who stay longer and spend more. A safe, thriving and diverse night-time economy will contribute to footfall and business viability across our urban areas. I remain committed to engaging with stakeholders to achieve this ambition.
