Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure whether she intends to increase investment in speed detection measures, including fixed and mobile cameras, following the finding that one quarter of respondents identify speeding as their main concern in the Road Safety Issues in Northern Ireland, 2024-25 survey.
Answer:
I want to use this opportunity to express my condolences to the families of the people who have recently lost their lives on our roads. Lives changed in an instant. In 2026 15 people have not returned home following a road traffic collision, this is why road safety remains a top priority for me. The policy regarding any review of speed detection cameras is the responsibility of the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership, and I would direct the member to contact the Partnership directly for this information. In light of the results of this Road Safety Issues survey, it is timely that my Department has recently launched an updated Road Safety Action plan. I continue to address the road safety issues that people are most concerned with and that are key in reducing road deaths. You will be aware that a Speed Limit review is currently underway and I would encourage everyone to take the time to respond. Other key interventions I am intending to introduce will include a new lower legal alcohol limit, examining options for increasing speeding fines, and the development of new scheme proposals on the Regional Strategic Transport Network, targeting those routes with highest collision rates where engineering-based solutions would mitigate risks. Alongside this, my Department continues to educate and promote safer road user behaviour, including the ‘Road Wise Up’ campaigns and ongoing ‘Share the Road to Zero’ initiatives, that remind us all of our personal responsibility on the road, and the things we can do to keep ourselves and other safe.
