Question: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs for an update on his efforts to improve environmental governance in Northern Ireland.
Answer:
Improving environmental governance remains a priority, and following the independent review, which brought forward the key recommendation to establish and Independent Environment Protection Agency in Northern Ireland, I brought a paper to the Executive seeking agreement in principle to move forward with establishing the new body. I am not alone in finding this hugely frustrating when we consider the costs of inaction and the overwhelming support for change that would benefit everyone. I would urge my Executive colleagues to provide the support needed so this important reform can advance. In parallel, officials are considering the wider recommendations falling within DAERA’s remit, noting where elements align with existing programmes of work. This includes ongoing activity to improve transparency around environmental information and to strengthen internal systems and processes. This approach enables my Department to maintain focus on areas within its direct control, pending an Executive decision on the broader governance reforms. Environmental governance is fundamental to protecting our environment, building public trust, and ensuring Northern Ireland meets its obligations. I remain committed to driving this agenda forward and ensuring that the reforms identified by the Panel are taken forward in a structured, evidencebased and timely way.
