Question: To ask the Minister for the Economy for an update on the development of an aviation strategy.
Answer:
Our geographical position as an island on the edge of Europe means we rely heavily on air connectivity to support trade, tourism and foreign direct investment. It is my ambition to strengthen our domestic and international connectivity. For this reason, my predecessor and I have recognised the importance of developing a regional aviation policy that is tailored to local priorities and reflects the specific needs of our communities and economy. Over the past year, my department has been working closely with key aviation stakeholders – including our three airports, the Tourism Partnership Board, Invest NI, and other Departments – to define the scope and objectives of the proposed policy. The public consultation on the aviation policy was launched on 27 March and closes on 22 May. It seeks views on a set of policy positions aimed at unlocking opportunities to enhance connectivity. Responses will be analysed following consultation closure to provide a robust evidence base to inform future policy interventions aligned with my economic priorities.
