To ask the Minister for the Economy for an update on her work on Artificial Intelligence.

Answer:

Artificial Intelligence presents a significant opportunity to improve productivity, create good jobs and strengthen our competitiveness, but it must be adopted in a way that is responsible and inclusive.

Last week, I convened the first meeting of my AI Advisory Panel, bringing together expertise from industry, academia, and government. The purpose of the Panel will be to advise me on the potential of AI technologies to deliver transformative economic impact, aligned with my economic priorities. Initially its focus will be to advise on the response to the Matrix ‘AI and the Future of Work’ report, prioritising recommendations and providing guidance on delivery approaches.

Alongside this, my Department continues to support businesses and workers through the Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre, Invest NI’s digital adoption support, and a strong skills pipeline – from postgraduate AI scholarships to programmes such as Skill Up, Assured Skills Academies and Higher Level Apprenticeships.

Within my own Department, AI is being introduced in a controlled and ethical way to support staff and improve efficiency, aligned with wider NICS governance.
