Question:
To ask the Minister of Health to detail (i) the number of people, aged 65 and over, that are currently held within the prison estate; (ii) the number of these individuals receiving domiciliary or social care support; and (iii) whether any challenges have been identified in meeting their care needs.

Answer:
On the 19 May 2026 there were 74 individuals in prison aged 65 years and over. This figure comprises three individuals in Hydebank Wood, 30 in Magilligan and 41 in Maghaberry. Source: Northern Ireland Prison Service.
Ten patients in prison have been assessed as requiring a package of care; six are in receipt and four are outstanding.
The absence of formally commissioned personal care provision within the prison estate can result in challenges securing and delivering the required care from the community setting. This matter remains under consideration by officials within my Department.
