Question: To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to outline any engagement he has had with businesses on the economic benefits of decarbonising the economy.
Answer:
I engage regularly with businesses and business representative bodies on the opportunities and economic benefits from decarbonising our economy. I recently participated in EY’s Four Futures event, which brought together a range of stakeholders to consider the actions required to deliver a more sustainable and competitive economy. I continue to engage directly with industry, including a recent visit to Encirc, to discuss decarbonisation options and the opportunities associated with lowcarbon innovation and investment. I also attended the Business in the Community Top Environmental Performers Forum and discussed how decarbonisation can drive productivity, resilience and growth. The leadership shown by these businesses is helping shape a more sustainable and competitive economy for Northern Ireland. In making the case for action, I have highlighted the Climate Change Committee’s recent analysis on costs, which shows that, when assessed in line with Green Book guidance, the benefits of Net Zero outweigh the costs and that continued reliance on fossil fuels exposes the economy to price shocks and wider damage. Through my engagement with businesses it is clear, that they understand that climate action is an investment in their sustainable future and not a burdensome cost. Recently I’ve seen firsthand how projects such as ARC Zero are demonstrating a pathway to low carbon farming, demonstrating the benefits of climate action in delivering economic opportunities, cleaner air, healthier communities, and stronger, more resilient ecosystems. The evidence supports that every pound spent on climate action brings two to four times the economic and social benefit, whilst avoiding billions in climate damage. I will continue to work with partners across government and the business community to support a fair and just transition and to maximise the economic and environmental benefits for Northern Ireland.
