Question:
To ask the Minister for Infrastructure for an update on the Safer Journeys to School programme.

Answer:
The Safer Journeys to School consultation on overtaking and passing buses ran from 26 March until 21 May and received a strong level of public engagement, with more than 600 responses submitted. My officials are now undertaking detailed analysis of the responses, alongside ongoing engagement with key partners including PSNI, to ensure proposals are evidence-based and deliverable.
I intend to bring forward legislation on the overtaking of stationary buses, informed by consultation and wider analysis, with a view to introducing it to the Assembly in Autumn 2026, subject to the necessary approvals, including Executive agreement.
Work is also being progressed as part of the wider Safer Journeys to School programme, to strengthen education, enforcement and practical safety measures. Improving safety for children travelling to and from school is a priority for me, which is why I am driving this work forward at pace
