Question: To ask the Minister for Infrastructure whether she will consider the extension of double yellow lines on Station Road, Moira, to discourage rail users from parking on-street and to encourage greater use of the recently developed park and ride facility at Moira Railway Station.
Answer:
I was pleased to officially open the new Park and Ride facility at Moira Train Station on 22 June. This significant development has created 578 free parking spaces which has greatly increased the parking available in the area. The new facility negates the need for on-street commuter parking on Station Road, improving safety for pedestrians accessing the station and contributing to more accessible and sustainable rail travel. The scheme includes a footway, 2.5m in width, linking the new facility to the railway station and street lighting along this link is being upgraded to current standards. My Department is currently developing Active Travel proposals to improve pedestrian and cycling linkages between Moira and Moira Train Station and the provision of lighting will be considered as a part of the design of this scheme. The introduction or extension of double yellow lines is considered in accordance with the Road Traffic Regulation (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 and the Department’s traffic management policies. Any proposal must be supported by an assessment of local traffic conditions, road safety considerations, access requirements and the wider impact on residents, businesses and road users. Requests for additional waiting restrictions are assessed alongside competing priorities across the road network and are subject to the availability of resources. My officials will continue to monitor conditions in the area and should evidence emerge that parking behaviour continues to create road safety or traffic management concerns, the need for additional traffic regulation measures, including the extension of double yellow lines, can be considered through the normal assessment process.
