To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail any action (i) her Department; and (ii) Tourism NI is taking to secure further major international sporting, cultural and tourism events for the Causeway Coast, following the success of the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush.

Answer:

As Economy Minister I fully support the hosting of major events here, given the significant economic, media, and social benefits they bring.

My Department has developed the Tourism Vision & Action Plan, and within this, Tourism NI has responsibility for the tourism events portfolio. At present Tourism NI is developing a new future approach to events that will include consideration of internationally mobile events as well as the development of our home–grown portfolio.

Major Event proposals are considered on the merits of the individual events, subject to value for money and affordability considerations.
