Question: To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail any assessment her Department has made of the impact of recent increases in petrol and diesel prices on (i) households in rural areas; (ii) people who rely on private vehicles to access employment and essential services; and (iii) rural businesses.
Answer:
I am keenly aware of the impact that recent increases in petrol and diesel prices are having on households and businesses across the North, particularly in rural areas where 78% of people would find it difficult to switch to an alternative method of transport and are more reliant on private vehicles for work, education, healthcare and other essential services. Rising fuel prices can also increase operating costs for rural businesses, particularly those in sectors such as transport, logistics, construction, agriculture and other activities where transport is a significant component of day-to-day operations. I will continue to ensure that the challenges arising for households and businesses across the North from increases in petrol and diesel prices are reflected in my engagement with the British Government and other stakeholders on the wider cost pressures they are facing.
