Question: To ask the Minister for the Economy to detail (i) any action she is taking to address difficulties faced by new build properties in rural areas of East Londonderry in securing a broadband connection; and (ii) whether she has considered requiring broadband infrastructure to be incorporated at the construction stage of new developments.
Answer:
My Department recognises the difficulties that some new-build properties, particularly in rural areas, can experience in securing good broadband connectivity. The speed of internet in an area, and any ducting or cabling infrastructure in a public street or road, are functions of the utilities provision to the area. As regards new-build properties, telecoms companies will often work with developers to ensure appropriate infrastructure is put in place during the construction phase. Publicly funded broadband programmes are designed to address identified market failure in existing premises, while developers are encouraged to continue to engage with telecommunications providers at an early stage so that appropriate broadband infrastructure can be considered as part of new-build developments. Some telecommunications companies have schemes in place whereby individuals can request a quote for the provision of fibre broadband to individual premises. My officials are engaging with other Departments including DoF to explore options.
