‘notes that the UK Government National LGBT Survey in 2018 reported that 2% of respondents had undergone conversion therapy with a further 5% having been offered it; acknowledges that this practice has been widely rejected by medical professionals; stresses that religious speech, belief, teaching, prayer and private conversations in which pastoral counsellors, doctors, mental health professionals, teachers, friends or family members provide affirming support to persons struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity do not constitute conversion therapy; further notes that such activities must be protected; and calls on the Minister for Communities to commit to bringing forward plans to consult widely, before the end of the current Assembly mandate, on plans to ban conversion therapy in all its forms.’
|
26/03/2021 | Leave out from ‘damage’ to ‘subjected to it;’ and insert:
‘direct damage this practice causes to the mental health and wellbeing of those who are subjected to it as well as the indirect stigma implied on the wider LGBTQ community;’
|
26/03/2021 | Leave out all after ‘professionals;’ and insert:
‘further notes the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy 2019 Memorandum of Understanding against conversion therapy, which they describe as unethical, potentially harmful and not supported by evidence; declares that it is fundamentally wrong to view minority orientation or gender identity as something that needs fixed or cured; and calls on the Minister for Communities, and other relevant Ministers, to commit to bringing forward legislation, before the end of the current Assembly mandate, to ban conversion therapy and which provides no exemptions for religious organisations.’
